History and Purpose

The John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award was created in 1989 by members of President Kennedy's family to honor President John F. Kennedy and to recognize and celebrate the quality of political courage that he admired most.

The award recognizes a public official (or officials) at the federal, state or local level whose actions demonstrate the qualities of politically courageous leadership in the spirit of  Profiles in Courage, President Kennedy’s 1957 Pulitzer prize-winning book, which recounts the stories of eight U.S. Senators who risked their careers by embracing unpopular positions for the greater good.

The award is presented each May at a ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in connection with the observance of President Kennedy’s birthday on May 29.

The Profile in Courage Award is administered by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. A distinguished bipartisan committee named by the Foundation reviews all nominations, and selects the recipient or recipients of the award.

What the Lantern Represents

The award is represented by a sterling silver lantern, modeled after the lantern on the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned ship in the U.S. Navy. The lantern was designed by Edwin Schlossberg and crafted by Tiffany & Co.

In his design summary for the presentation piece, Schlossberg wrote:

"We chose a ship's lantern as the most appropriate design solution for this award. The design of the presentation piece must be strong enough to enable it to become a clearly identifiable public symbol of the Profile in Courage Award. The physical presence of this piece should reflect the meaning and significance of the award. It must also be a handsome and elegant object; one which is distinctive, unique, yet easily recognizable. We believe a ship's lantern best meets these goals.

A lantern elicits immediate recognition, and evokes the shared cultural symbols of light and truth. Light is the beacon of warning, of safety, of hope in the wilderness. A lantern symbolizes the search for an honest man. It lights a dark path, illuminating the proper course. A lantern is in keeping with the profound message of the work, Profiles in Courage, that a courageous person is one who is honest, has integrity, and finds his own path despite the darkness of outside pressures. More specifically, a nautical image — a ship's lantern — is chosen in homage to the courageous naval career of President John F. Kennedy.

The design is modeled after authentic lanterns from 19th century American sailing vessels. The lantern is full size, cast in fine silver with four glass panels. The text etched on two panels is an identification of the purpose of the award, and a dedication to its recipient. A quote from President Kennedy's book, Profiles in Courage, is inscribed on another panel. A traditional nautical compass rose is etched on the fourth panel.

The sterling silver Profile in Courage lantern is a timeless symbol of humanity and a very special tribute to the man who inspires this award."

Coming Soon. New Post. It will include photos and videos from JFK's Birthday Centennial and the Profile In Courage Award event featuring recipient, Former President Barack Obama....

Rising Star Congressman Joe Kennedy III Delivers at State Of The Union

Congressman Joe Kennedy III delivers the Democratic Response to President Trump's State of the Union Address.

Democratic Response to State of the Union Representative Joe Kennedy III (D-MA) delivered the Democratic response to President Trump’s first State of the Union address. He criticized the actions taken in the first year of the Trump administration, accusing the president of “turning American life into a zero-sum game” in which one group wins at the expense of another. He vowed that his party would fight for all.

Who Is Massachusetts Representative Joe Kennedy III

Here's everything you need to know about the young Democrat giving tonight's response to the State of the Union.

Yes, he's one of those Kennedys.

Joseph Kennedy III was quite literally born into a political dynasty. His father, Joseph Kennedy II, served as a member of the House of Representatives for over 10 years. His grandfather was Senator Robert Kennedy, and his great uncles include JFK and longtime Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy. Going back even further, Kennedy's namesake Joseph Kennedy Sr. served as the SEC chairman and later the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom under FDR.

Joe Kennedy even got his political start on a family campaign. After college at Stanford and a stint in the Peace Corps, in 2006, he worked on his Uncle Ted's re-election bid to the Senate.

"People come up every day and usually say very nice things about my family, but sometimes not. You get both," Kennedy told Town & Country in a 2017 profile, acknowledging that being part of the Kennedy political machine certainly has its pros and cons.

"Look, my family means different things to different folks. I think for most people they have very fond memories and believe my family made important contributions to the country. And I happen to believe so too, and I’m grateful when people do mention that and share their stories: 'I shook your grandfather’s hand,' or JFK’s hand, or 'I met your Uncle Teddy.'"

He was first elected in 2012.

After graduating in Harvard Law school in 2009, Kennedy worked as an assistant DA in several Massachusetts counties, and in February of 2012, he announced his intention to run for the state's 4th congressional district seat, which was open following Barney Frank's retirement. In November of that year, he beat Republican Sean Bielat in the general election.

Kennedy has since been reelected to the U.S. House of representatives two more times, in 2014 and 2016. He currently serves on the Committee on Energy and Commerce.

At just 37, he is reportedly the youngest person to ever deliver the Democratic response to a Republican State of the Union.

Kennedy is hardly a fan of the current administration.

According to FiveThirtyEight, Kennedy votes in line with the President's position less than 14 percent of the time, and the Congressman isn't shy about sharing his criticisms of the the administration. Many of his speeches in opposition to Republican initiatives have gone viral including the one below, in which he called last year's GOP healthcare bill an "act of malice." It has been viewed over 10 million times.

He's married to his law school sweetheart.

Kennedy met Lauren Birchfield in now-Senator Elizabeth Warren's class at Harvard Law. They married shortly after he won his first election, and now have two children, Eleanor "Ellie" and James Matthew.

Does he have plans for a 2020 presidential run?

At this point, Kennedy has not shared his plans for 2020 publicly, but last fall, he said he would consider running for Senate at some point in the future.

"Somewhere down the road, if a Senate seat were to open, yeah it’s something I’d certainly take a look at,” he said in profile in Politico.

“But that’s got to be right in time for me and my family,” he said.

New Bobby Kennedy Book & Remarks by Ted Kennedy

Bobby Kennedy Book on Amazon

A revealing new portrait of Robert F. Kennedy that gets closer to the man than any book before, by bestselling author Chris Matthews, an esteemed Kennedy expert and anchor of MSNBC’s Hardball.

With his bestselling biography Jack Kennedy, Chris Matthews shared a new look of one of America’s most beloved Presidents and the patriotic spirit that defined him. Now, with Bobby Kennedy, Matthews returns with a gripping, in-depth, behind-the-scenes portrait of one of the great figures of the American twentieth century.

Overlooked by his father, and overshadowed by his war-hero brother, Bobby Kennedy was the perpetual underdog. When he had the chance to become a naval officer like Jack, Bobby turned it down, choosing instead to join the Navy as a common sailor. It was a life changing experience that led him to connect with voters from all walks of life: young or old, black or white, rich or poor. They were the people who turned out for him in his 1968 campaign. RFK would prove himself to be the rarest of politicians—both a pragmatist who knew how to get the job done and an unwavering idealist who could inspire millions.

Closing remarks by Senator Edward M. Kennedy at the Kennedy Library Conference "Robert Kennedy and the 1968 Campaign." John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, March 16, 2008.

Drawing on extensive research and interviews, Matthews pulls back the curtain on the public and private worlds of Robert Francis Kennedy. He shines a light on all the important moments of his life, from his early years and his start in politics to his crucial role as attorney general in his brother’s administration and his tragic run for president. This definitive book brings Bobby Kennedy to life like never before and is destined to become a political classic.
