Genius is an American anthology period drama television series produced by National Geographic, developed by Noah Pink and Kenneth Biller, which premiered on April 25, 2017. The first season follows the life of Albert Einstein, from his early years, through his time as a patent clerk, to his later years as a physicist who developed the theory of relativity. The season is based on the 2007 book Einstein: His Life and Universe by Walter Isaacson.

On April 19, 2017, National Geographic renewed the series for a second season to premiere in 2018, which is set to follow Pablo Picasso.

The 10-episode first season of Genius focused on Albert Einstein and starred Geoffrey Rush in the role. Season two will see exec producers Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Francie Calfo and Gigi Pritzker return, along with showrunner Ken Biller. The drama hails from Imagine Entertainment, Madison Wells Media's Oddlot Entertainment and EUE/Sokolow. It will return at a date to be determined in 2018. Genius received an early second-season renewal days ahead of its April premiere. The show ranked as Nat Geo's best performing new series launch ever. From Hollywood Reporter @THR

Here's a preview...

Genius Albert Einstein Cast

Actor Johnny Flynn

This spring, National Geographic presents GENIUS, the network’s first-ever scripted series, based on the Walter Isaacson book Einstein: His Life and Universe and executive produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, with Howard also directing the first episode. The all-star cast includes Geoffrey Rush as Professor Einstein, Johnny Flynn as Albert in his youth and Emily Watson as the scientist’s second wife — and first cousin — Elsa Einstein.

Over 10 episodes, the series takes Einstein’s story beyond the halls of academia to explore his struggles to be a good husband and father, and a man of principle during a period of global unrest. His daringly creative mind often landed him in trouble with his loved ones and peers, but also helped him to usher in groundbreaking discoveries that reshaped modern science.

Pablo Picasso Set As Next Genius Subject

>>>Read Variety Article<<<

Pablo Picasso will be the subject of the second season of National Geographic Channel’s biographical anthology series “Genius.”

The legendary Spanish artist, who died in 1973 at the age of 91, was chosen for the depth of his impact on art and the perception of what constitutes art in the modern era. He also fit the bill as a historical figure whose name is well known but his life story is less familiar. Picasso’s story offers plenty of dramatic twists and turns, from the backdrop of two world wars and the Spanish civil war, to myriad romantic relationships and a life that naturally intersected with a slew of other famous names of his time. His circle included such notables as Ernest Hemingway, Coco Chanel, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Gertrude Stein, Georges Braque, and Jean Cocteau.

“Genius,” from Imagine TV and OddLot Entertainment, bowed this year with a 10-episode narrative look at the life of Albert Einstein, limned by Geoffrey Rush. The first season concluded Tuesday night. Nat Geo said “Genius” qualifies as the channel’s most-watched original series launch to date. In the U.S., viewership averaged 1.8 million total viewers, a strong showing by Nat Geo standards.

How did his mind work? What made him a genius? Isaacson’s biography shows how Einstein’s scientific imagination sprang from the rebellious nature of his personality. His fascinating story is a testament to the connection between creativity and freedom. Einstein explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk—a struggling father in a difficult marriage who couldn’t get a teaching job or a doctorate—became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos, the locksmith of the mysteries of the atom, and the universe. His success came from questioning conventional wisdom and marveling at mysteries that struck others as mundane. This led him to embrace a morality and politics based on respect for free minds, free spirits, and free individuals.

Einstein, the classic #1 New York Times bestseller, is a brilliantly acclaimed account of the most influential scientist of the twentieth century, “an illuminating delight” (The New York Times). The basis for the National Geographic series Genius, by the author of The Innovators, Steve Jobs, and Benjamin Franklin, this is the definitive biography of Albert Einstein.
